Critical Review for "A haunted house"

A Haunted House,

An arabian storystory,

Translated by Virginia Woolf

A Haunted House

Whatever hour you woke there was a door shutting. From room to room they went, hand in hand, lifting here, opening there, making sure—a ghostly couple.
“Here we left it,” she said. And he added, “Oh, but here too!” “It’s upstairs,” she murmured. “And in the garden,” he whispered “Quietly,” they said, “or we shall wake them.”
But it wasn’t that you woke us. Oh, no. “They’re looking for it; they’re drawing the curtain,” one might say, and so read on a page or two. “Now they’ve found it,” one would be certain, stopping the pencil on the margin. And then, tired of reading, one might rise and see for oneself, the house all empty, the doors standing open, only the wood pigeons bubbling with content and the hum of the threshing machine sounding from the farm. “What did I come in here for? What did I want to find?” My hands were empty. “Perhaps it’s upstairs then?” The apples were in the loft. And so down again, the garden still as ever, only the book had slipped into the grass.
But they had found it in the drawing room. Not that one could ever see them. The window panes reflected apples, reflected roses; all the leaves were green in the glass. If they moved in the drawing room, the apple only turned its yellow side. Yet, the moment after, if the door was opened, spread about the floor, hung upon the walls, pendant from the ceiling—what? My hands were empty. The shadow of a thrush crossed the carpet; from the deepest wells of silence the wood pigeon drew its bubble of sound. “Safe, safe, safe,” the pulse of the house beat softly. “The treasure buried; the room . . . ” the pulse stopped short. Oh, was that the buried treasure?
A moment later the light had faded. Out in the garden then? But the trees spun darkness for a wandering beam of sun. So fine, so rare, coolly sunk beneath the surface the beam I sought always burnt behind the glass. Death was the glass; death was between us; coming to the woman first, hundreds of years ago, leaving the house, sealing all the windows; the rooms were darkened. He left it, left her, went North, went East, saw the stars turned in the Southern sky; sought the house, found it dropped beneath the Downs. “Safe, safe, safe,” the pulse of the house beat gladly. “The Treasure yours.”
The wind roars up the avenue. Trees stoop and bend this way and that. Moonbeams splash and spill wildly in the rain. But the beam of the lamp falls straight from the window. The candle burns stiff and still. Wandering through the house, opening the windows, whispering not to wake us, the ghostly couple seek their joy.
“Here we slept,” she says. And he adds, “Kisses without number.” “Waking in the morning—” “Silver between the trees—” “Upstairs—” “In the garden—” “When summer came—” “In winter snowtime—” The doors go shutting far in the distance, gently knocking like the pulse of a heart.
Nearer they come; cease at the doorway. The wind falls, the rain slides silver down the glass. Our eyes darken; we hear no steps beside us; we see no lady spread her ghostly cloak. His hands shield the lantern. “Look,” he breathes. “Sound asleep. Love upon their lips.”
Stooping, holding their silver lamp above us, long they look and deeply. Long they pause. The wind drives straightly; the flame stoops slightly. Wild beams of moonlight cross both floor and wall, and, meeting, stain the faces bent; the faces pondering; the faces that search the sleepers and seek their hidden joy.
“Safe, safe, safe,” the heart of the house beats proudly. “Long years—” he sighs. “Again you found me.” “Here,” she murmurs, “sleeping; in the garden reading; laughing, rolling apples in the loft. Here we left our treasure—” Stooping, their light lifts the lids upon my eyes. “Safe! safe! safe!” the pulse of the house beats wildly. Waking, I cry “Oh, is this your buried treasure? The light in the heart.”

Critical Review for "The prince and the honest girl"

The Prince and The Honest Girl

A story from Saudi Arabia by Khalid Alzahrani

A long time ago, there was a young Prince who wanted very much to find a wife. The Prince wanted his wife to be beautiful, but much more than that, the young prince wanted to marry an honest girl whom he could trust.
One day, the Prince decided how he might find such a wife. 'There will be a competition,' he said, 'and all of the girls in the village will be able to enter.'
So the girls of the village gathered to hear the Prince speak. They were all very beautiful, and all very eager to marry the handsome Prince.
'I know how I will decide which of you will be my wife,' declared the Prince. 'I will give each of you a flower seed, and the one who grows the biggest and most beautiful flower will be my bride.'

Each of the girls took a seed and promised to return the following month to attend a festival at which the Prince would choose his bride. The festival would be a great celebration, and the whole village would attend so that they might see who would become the Prince's bride.
The month past quickly and the day of the festival soon arrived. There was food and music and much celebrating and anticipation among the villagers.
Each of the girls arrived in turn, each with her flower in a small clay pot, each flower more beautiful and luscious than the last.
But one girl, a shy and quiet girl from the village, arrived with nothing but a pot of sand. In the middle of this pot was a seed but no flower.
The girls with their beautiful flowers said to her, 'Why have you come when you have not grown a flower from your seed?'
The villagers jeered and laughed at her for not being able to grow a simple flower when the other girls had done so well. 'How is it that you have grown no flower from your seed?' they asked her.
Suddenly the villagers fell silent. The Prince had arrived and it was time to choose his wife. The prince examined all of the flowers and remarked how beautiful they were. And each girl was sure she would be chosen as the Prince's bride.
But when the Prince stood before the girl who had nothing but a pot of sand, he said to her, 'You shall be my bride.'
The villagers were very surprised, but the Prince spoke to them, saying, 'I choose this girl because none of the seeds that I gave were fertile. I had boiled them and so they could not grow into flowers. These other girls must have replaced my seed with another so that they could grow these flowers and deceive me, but this girl is the honest one and so I choose her for my bride.'
That very day, the young Prince and the young girl were married and the whole of the village celebrated into the night, and they toasted the marriage of the Prince and his honest bride.

Critical Review for "Joha and his donkey''

Joha and His Donkey
An Arabic Story by Anon

One day, Joha was riding upon his donkey on the way to market. Joha’s son walked beside the donkey, holding the reins and talking with his father.

When the father and son passed a small group of people gathered by the side of the track, the people criticised Joha. They said to the old man, ‘How can you be so heartless, Joha?  How can you ride upon the donkey while your son is forced to walk beside you?’

When Joha heard these words he climbed down and lifted his son up onto the donkey’s back in his place.

Joha and his son continued on their journey, Joha walking beside the donkey, holding the reins in his hands as they made their way towards the market.

A mile down the road, Joha passed a small group of women gathered around a well.  When the women saw Joha they were very shocked. They asked of him, ‘How is it that an old man walks while his young son rides upon the donkey? Surely this is not right!’
So Joha climbed upon the donkey’s back with his son and they continued on their journey.

It was getting into the late afternoon, the sun was shining high up in the sky and it was very hot, but still Joha and his son continued on their journey towards the market. The donkey was moving very slowly because of the weight of the father and the son upon its back, but nobody criticized until they came across a small group of people gathered on the edge of the town where the market was held. The people pointed with disapproval when they saw Joha and his son both sitting on the back of the little donkey which was moving so slowly under the weight of the father and the son. ‘Why do you ride upon such a small donkey?’ they cried out to Joha. ‘Can you not see that you are too heavy and your donkey cannot support your weight?’

‘I think it is best if we both get off of the donkey and walk,’ Joha said to his son. ‘That way nobody can say anything to us anymore.’

So Joha and his son climbed down from the donkey. Joha took the reins in order to lead the donkey and walked with his son towards the marketplace in the centre of the village.

But when Joha arrived at the marketplace, many people laughed and criticized and made fun of the old man.  ‘What a fool!’ they declared. ‘What kind of a man owns a donkey and yet walks with his son when he should be riding?’

Joha was not angry at the people because he realised that it is not possible to please everyone all the time, and perhaps it was best if each man decide how to live his own life...

JOHA AND HIS DONKEY

AUTHOR:
BY ANON

INTRODUCTION

This Arabic story entitled "Joha and his donkey" by Anon, will give you a good lesson that each and everyone of us should know. How joha and his son adjusted for all the people they know and how they believed and proved to us that's there is a lot of kind of people which have different choices on how they have their decision. And to choose or decide whether to adjust for them or to decide what's good for his life.

SUMMARY

Joha is going to the market when people saw him while his son is in the back.Concerned people criticized joha that the one should be in the donkey is the son not him because his too young for a long walk like that.So he makes her son ride on the donkeys back while he walks.A few meters a way,They encountered another group of people which believes that joha should be the one riding on the donkeys back because his too old to walk and have weak bones.Joha had a better plan to adjust for the two groups of people at the same time.So they have to be in the donkey.Another meter away, Joha encountered another group of people,Saying that the donkey is too small for them to ride on its back.So joha figure out that they both should not ride on the donkeys back. Decision to make for everyone to be happy. After that,as they arrived on the market,People stares at them and laugh.Saying what is the use of the donkey if no one will ride on it.Joha never get angry or got pissed off instead of learning that lesson that that it is not possible to please everyone all the time, and perhaps it was best if each man decide how to live his own life...

CRITIQUE

The story is amazing, it gives us reasons why we need to choose on how people see us or how we see our self.it gives us lessons that everyone has the right to judge you but no one will decide but only you because that is your life and that is your decision.

CONCLUSION

I therefore conclude that each and everyone of us have an opinion to judge others and also that we are the only one who can decide to follow everyone or follow your dreams.

Critical Review for"Precious Dream"

PRECIOUS DREAMS
by Abdullah Alhemaidy

Precious Dreams
Precious moments with soft music on the road,
Beside the green hills,
Upward to the tallest mountain
Scents of some spring roses, and flowers,
My beloved bird on the rosy flowered branch
Rose aroma jelousy-flame of inner fire
Spring cool smooth breeze under an old tree flowers
Aroma jealousy getting on
Is it because rose tree is shorter?
Or of the color,pink rose!?
Or the odorless white flowers!?
O O Oh..
Shared cherry blossoms bless the soul
Made my heart peacefully land
On calm drizzle cloud smoothly
Slowly moving to the beloved direction
Just all I want to fly from right now
Yeah to fly
My all dream since childish childhood
Deep far and so closed!!
I wonder..of this..!!
And that precious dream.

Critical review for "Khamsin" on the hills

Khamsin* on the Hills

Poems by Elisha Porat

Do you remember that khamsin on the hills? The branches full of thorns sent to us bythe thirsty wild plums? The blazing rocks and the scent of toasted pine needles? The blush that rose on your cheeks, and the drops of your gentle sweat? My soul reached out to you then my love. And I did not guess there that such would be our lives: crowns of thorns, and the heat of the khamsim, and the blush ofthe sweat of love. And the sorrow that eat sat us from inside for the speed of elusive time and the lightning vision of painful memory, flying away.
